“Are you sure you’re okay to get home yourself?” asks Rick, holding my arm to keep me upright outside the pub.

A couple of hours and many drinks later I probably am not, but I am sober enough to know that Rick escorting me home at this point would be a bad idea. “I’ll be fine,” I slur. “If you can just help me get a cab that would be great.”

He hails a cab down and tucks me into the backseat, repeating my address to the driver and handing him a handful of bills with the promise that he’ll get me home safely. He leans his head through the back window and reminds me to text him when I make it home safely.

“Thank you, Rick.” I kiss him lightly on the side of the mouth. He winks and the cab pulls out into traffic.

I stumble in the front door and kick my heels off, narrowly missing Cinder who comes to greet me.

“Sorry, baby,” I mumble, and head to the kitchen for a glass of water. The house is quiet and dark and I wonder where Jake is before remembering with relief that he has a game at the squash club tonight. I rip my hair out of the elastic, massage my scalp, and let the tap run a few minutes until the water runs cold. I grab a mason jar from the cupboard, fill it to the brim with water and gulp it down. I set the glass down on the counter with a clank and steady myself.

I run my hand along the knife block and slide the knives out, one by one, laying them out on the counter beside each other. I am a knife salesperson hawking my wares; a utility knife, a boning knife, a bread knife, a carving knife and my personal favorite, a chef’s knife. I hover over the knives and adjust them into a shiny perfect row, letting my hair fall onto their glimmering blades.

I’ve had long hair my whole life. When I was twelve, I was obsessed with Joey from Dawson’s Creek and I wanted to cut my hair in a shoulder length style similar to hers. When I casually mentioned it to Cara she freaked out.

“If you cut your hair, we won’t look the same anymore,” she accused.

Cara and I were identical twins but as we grew older slight differences revealed themselves. Cara had more prominent freckles across her nose, and I was taller than her by a half inch. If you studied us closely, you’d notice my chin to be pointed while her chin was more square. Despite the minor differences even close friends and family members sometimes had trouble telling us apart.

“Yes, we will, I’ll just have shorter hair. You could always cut your hair,” I suggested.

“No, Charlie, we have to stay the same as long as we can.” She linked both of her hands in mine and stared at me intently.

I relented like I always did and agreed to keep my hair the same.
